Job Title:
Scientific Software Engineer
Key skills: C / C++ / MFC
Location:
Surrey
Duration: Permanent
|
Our client is a manufacturer of UV-VIS spectrometers used by research chemists
and biochemists around the world. They focus on high-speed time-resolved
spectral data acquisition systems and polarised light spectroscopy applications
such as circular dichroism and polarimetry. They are looking for a
software engineer to join the development team who is an experienced C / C++ /
MFC programmer and ideally have a technical / scientific programming background
or interest.
The principle elements of the software include instrument interfacing and
control, high speed real-time data acquisition, data manipulation and analysis.
Programming opportunities range from graphical data display and manipulation
right down to Windows device driver development and because of this a flexible
and adaptable skill base and programming interest will be advantageous. All the
current software runs on Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Programming is performed
using the Visual Studio platform.
The successful applicant will report directly to the Development Manager.
Training will be provided on an “as needs” basis but be largely through an
on-the-job approach.
The ideal candidate should have a degree in computer science or in a suitable
science subject or mathematics with a clear subsequent programming career
direction. In addition 2-4 years programming experience under Windows using
Visual C++ and MFC including knowledge of multithreading and exception handling.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate broad-based skills in
overall application design with the ability to implement the designs to tight
schedules and some knowledge of source control with Microsoft SourceSafe or CVS.
More advanced skills which are desirable include familiarity with the use of the
STL / Boost libraries and Windows device driver development using the Windows
Driver Model. Experience with COM / ATL and some experience of client-server
architectures would be beneficial.
The successful candidate will be working in a small team with other programmers
and engineers and should not only be able to work as a member of a team but must
also be self-reliant and show personal initiative in order to get on effectively
with project work independently.
